In 2006, Dr. Cepkinian reconstructed my shattered ankle, which I had broken in the Stehekin River during a backpacking trip in North Cascades National Park. The reconstruction of my ankle required seven screws and a steel plate, which I retain to this day. Before the accident I was an avid hiker, backpacking throughout all the Western states and elsewhere, in National Parks and local trails. Throughout the previous decade since the surgery, after healing I have backpacked and hiked hundreds of miles in Yosemite National Park, the Grand Canyon, Sequoia National Park, as well as in Alaska, and I have thanked Dr. Cepkinian many times in my mind, atop a mountain, overlooking a beautiful vista, for the chance he restored to me for continued mobility outdoors.
